Overview

Go wild in the Western Cape on an overnight trip with safari from Cape Town! Travel off the beaten track to immerse yourself in the African bush. The Western Cape offers the perfect backdrop for a wildlife encounter with guided ±2 hour 4x4 safari drive and ±1 hour bush drive in two prestigious private game reserves... as well as a chance to observe orphaned elephants in nature. You’ll also visit the ostrich capital of the world, Oudsthoorn and get a chance to try local delicacies for a taste of authentic local culture.

Learn more about the diversity of the African bush and her wildlife as your ranger shares nature’s secrets and teaches you about the region's fauna and flora. Set out on an open-topped 4x4 vehicle to search for buffalo, lion, rhino, kudu, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and more as you get closer to nature in this tranquil reserve. Another wildlife encounter takes you to Buffelsdrift Game Lodge for a shorter bush drive, and you can also choose an optional (with extra cost) Elephant Observation in nature to you learn more about three charismatic orphaned elephants. End off your experience with a drive through the rugged Klein Karoo plains of South Africa’s famed Route 62.

Day 1: Cape Town RegionSafariSafari

Start with a morning pick-up from your accommodation in Cape Town.

Mandela’s dream of an Africa at peace with itself is slowly becoming true. Today’s journey into the dark apartheid past starts with an early morning pick-up from your Cape Town accommodation to the District Six Museum to listen to ex-residents tales of enforced removals in the dead of night and their homes levelled to make way for ‘whites-only’ suburbs… all in the name of ‘apart hood’ – apartheid.

Back in apartheid times, Table Mountain provided a natural border between black and white settlements and even if there’s no physical border in place today, the harsh reality of previously disadvantaged communities still shows. After a short drive to the Cape Flats, you’ll visit the township of Gugulethu for a glimpse into these infamous “dump grounds for non-whites”. In contrast to the city’s wide, clean streets and white-washed historic buildings, backstreets crammed with corrugated-roofed, shanty-style accommodation complete with shiny satellite dishes and colourful clotheslines awaits.

A local guide navigates the streets of Langa township with ease winding past small taverns called shebeens, convenience stores, and if time permits an inspiring community garden project, all to provide a glimpse into everyday life. Here, fellowship is at the heart of everything and the noisy streets are filled with song and soul.

But, this township has also endured its fair share of bloodshed in the name of freedom and a visit to the Amy Biehl memorial and the Gugulethu 7 monument reinforces just how violent the struggle was.

End this half-day tour of reflection with a journey back to Cape Town and a better understanding of the struggle toward a united South Africa. Your guide can drop you off at the heart of Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront if you booked the additional add-on ferry ride and tour to Robben Island or drive back to your Cape Town accommodation.

Frequently asked questions

Pickup / Drop-off time guidelines?

Early morning pick up from your accommodation in Cape Town CBD or Stellenbosch is usually between 6 to 7am, subject to traffic and your specific address. You can receive your exact pickup time for your exact pickup address the afternoon before the tour. Return times after tours can range from very late afternoon to evening, and for multi-day group tours it usually vary between +/- 7pm to 10pm subject to traffic, weather or how long the group spend at stops during the day. Small group tours can't offer exact start or end times as it all is relative to each person in the group's pickup or drop-off addresses, season and possible road delays. Please do not make any scheduled arrangements (especially flights) for the first or last day of the tour.

If I do not bungy jump, what is the alternative options?

Some thrill seekers choose to bungy and others love to watch their friends soar from the highest bungy bridge in the world, but we understand it’s not for everyone. There are other also another option available which your guide will chat through with you on tour. You can head out on a short walk in the forest to explore the region under the canopy of Tsitsikamma’s famous forested region.

I’m travelling on my own, will I meet people?

We welcome solo travellers. Our tours generally range from four to 12 people per tour. It’s this small group size that gives our tours the personal touch and allows guests to mingle if they chose to.

How safe are safari game drives?

You will be required to sign a disclaimer before entering a National Park or Private game reserve - which is fairly standard in South Africa – but rest assured, safety is paramount and your guides will make sure you are well looked after.

Inside your safari vehicle, your guide will give further safety instruction. Please remember the animals in National Parks and Game Reserves are wild, so do not leave the vehicle, taunt animals with food or hang your head, arms and legs or other body parts out of the jeep or bus.
